First day in Tokyo

Our inner clocks and the Tokyo clocks were not in sync. We all had trouble sleeping but rose and shone for breakfast. It was your usual breakfast buffet: roast potatoes, sausage, fish, rice, curry, miso soup, tiny croissants, French bread slices (for toast), macaroni salad, tomatoes, cucumbers, yogurt, canned fruit, etc. Plus coffee, tea, juice. Milo really enjoyed his juice but is not entirely sure what it was.

Sean joined us because he had the morning off and we went to the train station to activate our JR rail passes, reserve a train and get Suica cards (for subway, etc).

Dave returned to the hotel to nap, and we went on to Ueno park. After a stop at Starbucks for coffee (or strawberry macchiato) Sean hopped on the train for work. Milo and I went to the zoo. We saw a variety of animals and a whole lot of school children. The primary kids wore brightly coloured hats and shorts and tee shirts (one school had the girls in red shorts, white tee shirts with red trim, and the boys the same except navy and white). The middle schoolers wore more subdued uniforms and white caps. The high school kids didn’t have the hats but the uniforms were more classic - dark pants, white shirts on boys, pleated skirts and white shirts on the girls. I have attached a photo of the spoonbill which is a very large bird neither Milo nor I want to meet in a back alley.

We returned to the hotel via a convenience store. Milo had an odd drink (yogurt and soda maybe) and a banana bun thing. I opted for water and a chocolate croissant. We both enjoyed our choices. Then rest time for Milo and I and more nap for Dave.

We went for supper to Wendy’s First Kitchen. We all had chicken and fries. Milo’s Japanese touches were his melon drink and super fancy dessert Dango, Azuki & Softserve with Strawberry Paste, Brown Sugar and Agar Jelly. Prettily presented in a plastic dish. We had another convenience store excursion then home.  Photos include a bicycle parking lot.
